Out of Iso Again!
Out of Iso returns to 107 Redfern, in two joyful immersive performance mashups, featuring new and revisited works across theatre, dance, live art, music and comedy, from 20 of Sydney’s most exciting artists.
Dance features strongly, with works from award-winning First Nations artist Vicki Van Hout; Pioneers director Eliam Royalness, spanning hip hop, vogue and Samoan Siva dance; Gabriela Green Olea’s exploration of dance as activism; Klappsquad’s invented street dance based on football; and internationally acclaimed Compañia Pepa Molina’s “Las Flamenkas” ensemble dancers Eliza Cooper & Amari Leiva Urzua.
For performance and theatre lovers, Too Rude‘s Nature is Healing explores the bush turkey as icon of resistance to urban gentrification; Rosell Flatley’s Sorry, Salamat! navigates cultural heritage & difference; Shammgods pitch their talent agency; a woman navigates post-human life with a tentacle instead of an arm, in The Sucker; Moreblessing Maturure explores the constructed intimacy of public apologies; and Mark Rogers performs an auto-tuned opera to celebrated techno producer Snowy’s soundtrack.
There are musical explorations, with Michaela Davies recreating her work Electric Muscle Stimulation and Solo Piano, with pianist and legendary contemporary performance figure, Nigel Kellaway. You won’t believe drummer Tina Havelock Stevens & bassist Phil Downing can fit into the space they’re playing in! And both programs culminate in a musical finale, from teenage sensation three piece band Polly, and blues belter and vaudeville vamp Christa Hughes.
You’re free to roam the quirky space at your leisure, curating your own performance journey, from bar to theatre to rooftop garden BBQ, and everywhere in between… where you’ll find Gadigal visual artist Nadeena Dixon’s digital animations, Teik Kim Pok’s karaoke massages, Brian Fuata’s seriously disturbed Santa Claus, and BBQ by Get Shish’d.
Then close the night out on the dance floor til midnight, with DJs Tropicante SoundSistema (9–11 Dec) and Sweet Thing & Del Piero (16–18 Dec)… or just chill with friends in the bar.
20 artists in two massive programs in two consecutive weeks. Two performance parties to close out 2021 in style … brought to you by returning Out of Iso curators, Latai Taumoepeau, Phil Downing & Malcolm Whittaker, produced by Intimate Spectacle.
Which one will you come to? No need to choose, come to both!
Last year Out of Iso engaged 60 diverse artists across four programs, and kickstarted numerous new works and continuing collaborations. Check them out in the video below, and support us in making it all happen again!
