Jack Prest
Jack Prest is an interdisciplinary artist, sound engineer and composer, whose practice incorporates, electronic, avant-garde and ambient music, sound art, new media, video and performance. With a deep technical understanding of sound and training in conceptual art, his practice focuses on experimental electronic music. For Jack that means anything from ambient spaces to hip hop to music concrète to club beats. Viewing the studio as his main instrument, pushing sonic boundaries through music production overrides a specific style or genre.
Jack frames his sound practice within a wider interdisciplinary vision, best demonstrated by his debut work as lead artist, The Risk Of Hyperbole (commissioned by Phoenix Central Park in late 2021). His interdisciplinary work has received support from Art Gallery of NSW, Create NSW, Australia Council, Bundanon Trust, Foxy Digitalis, FBi, NTS and Dublab.
The Risk of Hyperbole was his debut full-length performance work as lead artist and director, having created scores for numerous dance and theatre works previously. These include Branch Nebula’s 2013 Helpmann Award winning Whelping Box and Nick Power’s Australian Dance Award nominated Between Tiny Cities, and MFI commission Two Crews.
Performance works, for which he has composed original scores, have featured at venues including Sadlers Wells, Belfast Festival, Tanz im August, ImPulsTanz Vienna, Sziget Festival, Noorderzon Festival, Sydney Opera House, Dance Massive, Sydney Festival, Darwin Festival, Bleach Festival, Adelaide Festival, Brisbane Festival, Carriageworks, Next Wave, Junction Festival, Freespace (Hong Kong), and over 20 venues in 10 countries visited by Nick Power’s Between Tiny Cities toured by Intimate Spectacle.
Jack is a senior engineer at Studios 301, Australia’s largest recording facility, and is a leading engineer within the Australia independent and alternative music scene. His engineering credits feature The Preatures, Sampa the Great, Kool Keith, Flume, What So Not, Action Bronson, Urthboy, Tasman Kieth, David Campbell, Delta Goodrem, Jonti, Santpoort, Bruce Springsteen, and Godtet. He created the score for the 2013 Helpmann Award winning Whelping Box and in 2018 was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance at the Australian Dance Awards for Between Tiny Cities.
